Card Cheat – Music to Play Poker By

Deanna Goodson - 18 Feb 2009

The Clash was one of the seminal punk bands to come out of the UK in the 70s. Led by the now-deceased Joe Stummer, they had a major radio hit in the 80s with the militant “Rock the Casbah”.

But, we would wager that you don’t know that The Clash has some great poker-playing music. Most notably is their song, “The Card Cheat”.

Some of the lyrics are pretty telling (we wonder if the guys have ever been on a losing hand of a colluded pot – just saying)…

With a card up his sleeve, what would he achieve?

To the opium den and the barroom gin
In the belmont chair playing violins
The gamblers face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades

But the dealer just stares
There’s something wrong here…
The gambler is seized and forced to his knees
And shot dead
