The action has gotten so hot at the World Series of Poker Main Event in 2008 that the temperature at the Rio room is incalculable. The excitement is high. The tension is thick. Everyone’s attention is turned towards the final 79. By the end of Day 6, these 79 will be 27 strong. Somewhere in this field are the final nine players, each of whom will become a poker superstar in no small part due to the 100 plus final table delay decided upon by Harrah’s and ESPN earlier this summer.
The few professionals remaining from the 6,844 strong field of players were bounced from play during Day 6 including Victor Ramdin (64th place - $96,500), Phil Hellmuth (45th place - $154,401) and Mike “The Mouth” Matusow (30th - $193,000). Nikolay Losev bears the distinction of being the last elimination of the evening. His 28th place finish was also good for $193k.
Dennis Phillips is on top with 11,910,000 chips. The last lady remaining in the event, Tiffany Michelle, an actress and commentator for PokerNews.com, is sitting pretty in third place with 9,755,000 chips. Also remaining in the event are David “Chino” Rheem, Brandon Cantu, Albert Kim and Phi Nguyen. Day 7 will play down to the final table. We're almost there, folks!
