Adam Gerber Wins US Poker Championship

The United States Poker Championships (USPC) wasn’t televised this year on ESPN. As a result pros such as John D’Agostino, John Juanda and Phil Hellmuth, who all fared well in this event in previous years, were conspicuously absent from the action. Attendance for the event was down overall. However, 164 people still came to play in the championship event, held at the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City.

Poker pro, Gavin Smith, still sporting his pink hair – which he dyed to in support of Breast Cancer survivors such as his galpal, was the final table bubble boy, finishing in ninth place.

On Saturday, October 6th, the final eight battled it out for the title. Adam Gerber, a businessman from Morristown, NJ, held the chip lead going in. His 1.9 million stack made him a force to be reckoned with at the final table.

The first one out of the final table was Tommy Wang. Svetlana Gromenkova, the only lady still in the event, took him out with her A,10 of hearts. Tommy earned $31,818 for his eighth-place finish. Gromenkova was the next one out after her A,Q failed to improve against Gerber’s pocket sevens.

Jared Okun would watch in horror as A,Q got hooked by the pocket jacks of his opponent, Matt Glantz. His sixth place ousted netted him $55,678.

Victor Ramdin, a WPT winner and Poker Stars sponsored pro, was easily the biggest name at the table. However, he couldn’t overcome the large deficit between his stack and the rest of the remaining players. He pushed all-in with big slick in the hole and was called by Louis Lee with just a K,7. Lee caught a seven on the flop, and Ramdin went from a near double up to the rail. Ouch!

Brogdon, in his cowboy hat, hit the rail in fourth place, earning $95,488. Soon afterwards, Matt Glantz saw his chip stack fall near the danger zone. He took a risk with A,Q of spades. Gerber called with pocket sixes. He made quads on the river to eliminate his opponent and lengthen his lead going into heads up play against Louis Lee. The end didn’t take long as Gerber raked in the final hand, winning over $600,000, a portion of which he promised to donate to Ramdin’s charity, “Guayana Watch”, and a Rolex timepiece.

Here are the final results:
