2,317 players took to the felt for the $2,000 No-Limit Hold’em Tournament at the 2008 World Series of Poker, driving up the prize pool to an impressive $4,216,940. About 200 players made bank in the event including Chau Giang, Trond Eidsvig, Sarah Bilney and Erica Schoenberg.
Coming into the final table, however, the chip leader was 22 year old online player Marco “Crazy Marco” Johnson. Also sitting near the top were Alabaman Gabe Costner and Russian player Kirill Gerasimov. Costner, who finished fourth at the 2008 WSOPC Main Event in New Orleans, made an early exit from this final table. His eighth place finish was good for $103,315.
Gerasimov is one of the best players to ever come out of Russia. The Muscovite has earned more than $1,750,000 in tournaments to date including multiple cashes at World Series events. He was KO’d in sixth position by Ryan D’Angelo, an aggressive player who eliminated at least three players from the final table.
The 22 year old D’Angelo, who hails from Blacksburg, Virginia, made it all the way to three-handed play before Brazilian lawyer turned poker player Alexandre Gomes took him out. This gave Gomes the advantage as heads-up play began. The 25 year old from Curitiba, South Brazil’s largest city, held 6.7 million chips to Crazy Marco’s 2.5 million chips.
Despite being concerned about facing Johnson in heads-up play, Gomes prevailed and became the first Brazilian to win a WSOP bracelet…in the Amazon Room at the Rio, of all places.
These are the results:
1) Alexandre Gomes - $770,540
2) Marco Johnson - $491,273
3) Ryan D’Angelo - $326,812
4) Robert Brewer - $274,101
5) Alan Cutler - $223,497
6) Kirill Gerasimov - $177,111
7) Sverre Sundbo - $134,942
8) Gabe Costner - $103,315
9) Dan Rome - $71,687
