The Aussie Millions Main Event began on January 14, 2008. 780 people turned up for the tournament which boasts a total prize pool of more than $6.6 million. Pros such as Shannon Elizabeth, Mike Sexton, Aussie Sarah Bliney, Gavin Smith and Annette Obrestad took to the felt in three Day Ones of play. None of these big names would make it to Day 2.
On Day 2, Joe Hachem, Phil Ivey and Kenna James were among the throng of 338 still in the mix. Full Tilt Poker pro and former Maxim covergirl, Cycalona “Clonie” Gowen busted out early after her Ah,Qh fell to the pocket kings of her opponent. Howard Lederer, who took down event #9 earlier in the series, hit the rail on Day 2 after Raymond Rahme, a South African poker player who sat at the WSOP Main Event final table in 2007, caught a great flop with his A,9.
As Day 3 action got underway, the bubble was about to burst. 98 people returned to claim their share of the richest prize pool south of the Equator. Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, winner of the 2005 WSOP Tournament of Champions, couldn’t catch any cards throughout the day. The beautiful chip stack he built up at the end of Day 2 dwindled down to nothing. Soon after, Jeffrey Lisandro bid ‘g-day mate’ to the competition. Both of these talented pros missed out on the moolah.
Lucio Baroni and Charles Cuschieri split the $15,000 prize for 80th place. The remaining players could breathe a sigh of relief. Each would receive something for their Herculean efforts. Matt Matros, a former WPT final tablist, Tom “durrr” Dwan and Kevin “BeLOWaBOVe” Saul hit the felt not long afterwards as did Tiffany Williamson, who had an incredible run at the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event (she finished in fifteenth place).
At the end of Day 3, only 22 players remained. Each hoped to make it to the end of Day 4 and the final table. Unfortunately fifteen players would face elimination before the end of action including Max “The Italian Pirate” Pescatori. The talented player took tenth place after losing his shirt against Antonio Casale’s pocket eights.
With the end of Day 4 looming, the final table was in everyone’s sights. One player, however, rose to the top of the chip heap, claiming more than 40% of the chips in play when the action was said and done. That man is Michael Chrisanthopoulos. Antonio Casale is in second position and Erik Seidel, who owns 8 World Series of Poker bracelets, is still in the thick of things with nearly 1.5 million chips.
Here are the final chip counts and seating positions:
Seat 1: Alexander Kostritsyn - 1,439,000
Seat 2: Peter Mobbs - 1,357,000
Seat 3: Antonio Casale - 1,995,000
Seat 4: Erik Seidel - 1,491,000
Seat 5: Nino Marotta - 1,649,000
Seat 6: Michael Chrisanthopoulos - 6,806,000
Seat 7: Peter Ling - 877,000
