Although the people sitting at the final table of the $2,500 buy-in No Limit Hold’em Main Event of the 2008 British Columbia Poker Championships were relatively “inexperienced’ (at least that’s how eventual champion Daniel Negreanu describes them in his online journal over at Full Contact Poker), the friendly Canadian-born poker superstar admits that he’s amazed at “how much better players are getting.” Even though it “makes it harder to win”, Daniel writes that he enjoys “the challenge of playing high level poker in the late stages of a tournament.”
Negreanu, who made the trip ‘back home’ for the event, defeated 689 other players in the tournament to take the top prize of $371,910. A native of Toronto, Negreanu said that the event was “extra special” to him and praised the British Columbia Lottery Corporation and event organizers for putting on very “well organized” tournament.
A total of 60 players made bank in the event including Steven-Paul Ambrose, a former Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure champion, and Dennis Phillips, who took third place in the recent World Series of Poker Main Event. Also in attendance at the Main Event, which was held at the River Rock Casino Resort in British Columbia were Liz Lieu, Brad “Yukon” Booth, Gabe Kaplan, Gavin Smith, Isabelle Mercier and Lacey Jones.
The final results from the Main Event are as follows and are in Canadian dollars:
1) Daniel Negreanu - $371,910
2) Adam Croffut - $238,191
3) Warren Russell - $150,285
4) Vorakbotgh Eam - $118,335
5) Vincenzo Abate - $97,204
6) Tyler Patterson - $76,580
