WSOP 2008 – Event #3 Results

Serena DaSilva - 5 Jun 2008

David Singer is a fantastic poker player. The recent winner of the$25,000 Heads Up Poker Championship at Full Tilt Poker, has earned more than $3,765,000 in tournaments alone. A second place finisher at the NPL Vegas World Championship, an event he lost to fellow Full Tilt player Allen Cunningham, Singer had yet to earn his first World Series of Poker bracelet.

713 players took to the felt in Event #3, a Pot Limit Hold’em competition at the WSOP. During the first day of play, that number was whittled down to just 63. As Day 2 approached dinner time, ten players remained. David Singer, who was on a short stack, opted to take his dinner break. Upon his return, his game was reenergized and Singer made the final table.

Despite the odds, Singer doubled through Al Barbieri, eliminating him in eighth position with an A,Q in the hole. By the time, he eliminated Joe Tehan, winner of the WPT’s Mandalay Bay Championship (fifth season), Singer had rocketed up to near the top of the chip heap. Tehan received $43,796 for his sixth place finish.

Singer also clipped the wind out of Robert Lipkin’s sails. Holding pocket jacks, Singer struck at the 430th place finisher at the 2007 WSOP Main Event. Lipkin walked away in fourth position with his biggest payday to date.

At this point, Jacobo Fernandez positioned himself for a heads-up match-up with Singer. Fernandez sent fellow Floridian Greg Alston to the rail in third position and steadied himself for several hours of solid, heads-up play against Singer. Two hands decided the tournament’s outcome. On the first, Singer held A,K in the hole. Fernandez had pocket fives. The flop yielded two pair for Singer. Both players went all-in and Singer’s lead held. The chip infusion gave him a massive lead.

On the very next hand, Singer earned a seven-high straight and put Fernandez all-in with his two pair, sevens and threes. The river did not bring a boat to bail Fernandez out and Singer pumped his fist in the air, claiming WSOP victory and his place in history.

These are the final results:

1) David Singer - $214,131
2) Jacobo Fernandez - $136,643
3) Gregory Alston - $82,725
4) Robert Lipkin – $67,640
5) Russell Harriman - $55,474
6) Joe Tehan - $43,796
7) Zachary King - $34,063
