The final table of the $2,000 Pot Limit Hold’em Event started with Jan Von Halle in the lead. Von Halle is perhaps best known as the husband of Katja Thater, Poker Stars pro and winner of the 2007 Razz championship at the WSOP. Also sitting at the table were Gentleman Ben Roberts, Lee Watkinson, Chris Bell and Belgian player Davidi Kitai.
Roberts, who took sixth place in the 1998 WSOP Main Event, didn’t make it past eighth place this time. The Persian-born Brit lost a coin flip with his pocket sevens against the K,J of Robert Cheung…after Cheung spiked a jack on the turn. Gentleman Ben earned $30,831 for his efforts.
Cheung, a resident of Vancouver, Canada, has a World Series bracelet from 2007 ($1,500 NLHE). However, he couldn’t earn his second in this event. He headed to the rail in sixth place after Chris Bell, who’s cashed multiple times on the WPT, rivered an Ace-High straight. Bell then took out Lee Watkinson, who has a bracelet in Pot Limit Omaha (WSOP 2006), in fifth position.
At this point, Von Halle hit the rail. The German pro went from first to worst after tussling with Belgian player Davidi Kitai in not one, but two monster pots. Von Halle finished fourth, his best WSOP finish to date, and received $77,077. Kitai would take the bulk of Von Halle’s chips with him into heads-up play against Bell, a resident of Raleigh, NC. Bell has earned more than $1.5 million in tournament in his poker-playing career and had the chip lead as the match got underway.
Four hours later, Kitai had the chip lead and put Bell all-in. Kitai had an A
,Q
. Bell held the A
,J
. The board was no higher than a ten. The river and turn were blanks so Kitai’s kicker was good enough to earn him the bracelet.
These are the final results:
1) Davidi Kitai – $244,583
2) Chris Bell – $155,805
3) Keith Greer – $94,694
4) Jan Von Halle – $77,077
5) Lee Watkinson – $63,313
6) Robert Cheung – $50,100
7) Ayaz Mahmood – $39,089
8) Benjamin Roberts – $30,830
9) Michele Greco – $22,572
