Eric “Sheets” Haber was disappointed when he finished 16th at the 2007 WSOPC Main Event in Atlantic City. Haber, a native of New Jersey who now makes his home on Long Island, is a backgammon buddy of fellow pro Phil Laak. He used to be a stock trader, specializing in hedge funds. A sit & go specialist, Haber hangs with “The Crew”, a group of pals including Dutch Boyd and Brett Youngblood. Haber often credits Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy with teaching him the ropes of the game, lessons he apparently learned well.

Haber does prove the adage - what a difference a year makes. Why? This year he came back to Atlantic City, one of the few live action events he manages to attend. As he says, “I really cherish the opportunity to play in live tournaments. I am married with kids and I do not get the opportunity to play in as many events as some others, so I really have to make the most of it when I play live with real people. To be able to grind it out day after day after day at one of these major events and then make it all the way to the final table is something really special.”

This year, he made it all the way to heads-up play against Day Two chip leader Dan Hicks. Hicks, a resident of Tampa, FL, also head the top spot on Day One of this event. However, he took the runner-up slot in this event, netting more than $237,000 for his impressive efforts.

The day – and the tournament title – truly belonged to Haber. He dispatched the third-place player and went into the heads-up match on a roll. He emerged victorious and claimed his biggest tournament win to date.

These are the final results:

1) Eric Haber - $431,136
2) Dan Hicks - $237,124
3) Sumeet Batra - $121,257
4) Soheil Shamseddin - $94,311
5) Steven Greenberg - $80,838
6) Nick Binger - $67,365
7) Scott Blackman - $53,892
8) Steven Merrifield - $40,419
9) Marc Morris - $26,946
