Fifty three of Europe’s most talented and fearsome female poker players will hit the felt this weekend as Ladbrokes’ European Ladies Championship (ELC) begins. Each of these ladies will compete for a piece of the $100,000 prize pool pie. Now in the third year, the ELC is Europe’s biggest ladies-only tournament.
Annette Obrestad, winner of the WSOPE Main Event, will be in attendance along with last year’s ELC champ, Jackie Meecham. British poker mainstays Bev Pace and Katherine Hartree are also signed up to play as are poker cuties Liv Boeree and Abi Titmuss.
Abi, a well-known media personality in the UK, has said of her foray into poker, "I've been playing quite a bit of poker over the past few months and enjoy being a woman playing in what is predominately seen as a man's game. The fact that women-only tournaments like the Ladbrokes European Ladies Championship have been so successful proves that times are changing. I'm delighted to be involved but I think the prize money is safe!"
Ladbrokespoker’s PR manager, Samantha Alleyne added, “Women's involvement in poker has seen tremendous growth in the last few years. The ELC is a great tournament to encourage female poker players to get more involved and it also acts as a platform for more women to compete in bigger tournaments.”
The ELC will be played at the London Studios on London’s South Bank, overlooking the Thames on Saturday May 3 and Sunday May 4, 2008. The event will be broadcast on Sky Sports later this year in a series of six, one-hour shows.
The payout structure of the ELC 3 is as follows:
• 1st - $30,000
• 2nd - $20,000
• 3rd - $16,000
• 4th - $12,000
• 5th - $10,000
• 6th - $6,000
• 7th - $4,000
• 8th - $2,000
