The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour sailed into Plymouth this weekend to find its best no limit poker player. In all 179 players made the journey south to try their luck at the tables and walk away with the top prize of over £70,000 (£10,000 added by Bluesq.com) and a seat at the Grand Final in London later this year. Although the numbers were smaller than usual many of the top name professionals still came to play including the likes of Willie Tann, Barry Neville and Neil Channing not to mention returning winners such as Praz Bansi and Dave Smith.
After four days of intense poker the final table consisted of six professionals, two local players and the GUKPT’s second ever female finalist Barbara Gibson from Chepstow. Despite valiant efforts by Plymouth’s finest it was Chaz Chatta and Julian Thew who eventually went heads up and fought it out for the right to be crowned the tour’s eighth winner. After a relatively short encounter Julian’s pocket nines held up against the south Londoners Ace Two and the contest was over. Julian who is currently holidaying nearby with his family will be able to relive his moment of glory when it is shown later on in the year on Channel Four.
Jonathan Raab Tour Manager for the GUKPT commented
“Julian Thew is one of the nicest guys in UK Poker and is thoroughly deserving of the biggest win of his career so far. We look forward to seeing him in London and hope that he can become the first GUKPT winner to win back-to-back titles”
