Michael Haggard (credit: Heartland Poker Tour)

300 men and women headed out to the mountains of Black Hawk, Colorado recently. Each of these folks hoped to win the Heartland Poker Tour title at the Golden Gates Casino. The name of the game was No-Limit Texas Hold’em.

When all was said and done, Michael Haggard, a 43 year old small business owner who makes his home in Evergreen, Colorado, was the last man standing. Although he began the final table with the shortest stack of the bunch, he outlasted everyone, much to the chagrin of Steve Klaus, a 37 year old chiropractor from Denver. Klaus reached heads-up play against Haggard who went all-in seven times and won (or split) each time.

This amazing roller-coaster of events led Klaus to remark, “That guy has more lives than a cat.” Haggard, of course, acknowledged that he “got pretty lucky.”
