397 players headed to Costa Rica and braved the rain – not an easy feat considering the proximity of the Central American Rain Forest. They put up their £2,500 to play in the event, which was held at the Cariari Country Club near San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital city. 45 local players were amongst those who took part in the event. Steven Thompson was the top finisher in this Costa Rican contingent.
Six of the top nine qualified via event sponsor, PokerStars. This included the eventual winner, 24 year old Hungarian player Valdemar Kwaysser. Kwaysser, who hails from Budapest, previously won more than $130,000 at a Sunday Million tournament at the online home of Humberto Brenes.
In the end, Kwaysser emerged victorious, taking the title and raking in his biggest payday to date. Kwaysser admitted that he got a little “lucky” but was absolutely thrilled about his accomplishment.
These are the final results.
1) Valdemar Kwaysser -$274,103
2) Max Steinberg - $144,773
3) Steven Silverman - $106,167
4) Alex Soderland - $77,212
5) Alec Torelli – 57,909
6) Pawel Sanojca -$38,606
7) Ashton Griffin - $28,955
8) Joe Ebanks - $19,303
9) Steven Thompson - $14,477
