J.C. Tran has an impressive poker resume. A former World Poker Tour player of the Year (2007), Tran has a WPT title, multiple WPT & WSOP cashes and a win in the World Championships of Online Poker (WCOOP) in 2006 under his belt. His live tournament earnings are nearly $7,000,000. However, until Event #49, a World Series of Poker bracelet eluded the poker superstar.
Tran defeated one of the biggest fields at the 2008 WSOP in the $1,500 NLHE tournament. A total of 2,718 players entered the tournament, 270 of them made bank including Men Nguyen, Neil Channing, Hevad Khan, Matt Matros and Kristy Gazes. Tran entered the final table second in chips behind Danish poker pro Rasmus Nielsen. Nielsen, a fourth place finisher at the 2008 EPT Scandinavian Poker Open, had a massive chip lead.
After a rapid-fire final table, the duo faced each other in heads-up play. Tran battled back from a nearly 3-to-1 chip deficit. He admitted that being on the “right side of the cards” helped. Over the next hour and a half, Tran chipped away at Nielsen’s lead. On the last hand of the match, Tran out-kicked his opponent and walked away with his first bracelet.
These are the final standings:
1) J.C. Tran - $631,170
2) Rasmus Nielsen - $389,557
3) John Conroy - $278,255
4) Peter Nguyen - $233,734
5) Joe Pelton - $191,068
6) Chad Siu - $150,257
7) Jesper Hoog - $113,157
8) Robert Kalb - $85,331
9) Christoph Kohnen - $58,248
