Jaffacake for Ladbrokes Poker

Jaffacake from Ladbrokes Poker gives his views on the WSOPE:

The first World Series of Poker Europe has come and gone, and whatever your feelings on the organisation of the event and the bizarre three-casino set-up, one fact was made abundantly clear: European poker is going from strength to strength.

Annette Obrestad, an 10-year-old Norwegian landed the £1million first prize, defeating Ladbrokes legend John "KunkuWap" Tabatabai, heads up.

Analysing the results of the £10k main event further shows that, whilst every top player from around the world - Phil Ivey and Mike Matusow apart - made the trip to London for the inaugural WSOPE, only one of the top 10 players was non-European: American online qualifier Matthew McCullough.

All of the final table were predominantly online players, yet here they were, on one of the biggest stages in world poker, fighting it out for a WSOP bracelet. Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Scotty Nyguyen, Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth all came to London but failed to conquer as the new generation of players dominated. Make no mistake, the structure of the WSOPE was superb: 20,000 chips and two-hour levels. Anyone can get lucky in a crapshoot, but this was a proper tournament where the cream rose to the top.

I witnessed both the good and the bad of playing in such a prestigious event. I arrived, as instructed by the organisers, at the Sportsman Casino in good time to play, only to be informed that I was actually playing at 50 St James’s. A mad dash through London in a taxi still couldn’t prevent me missing the opening hands, which in a tournament of this magnitude should surely never happen.

Still, despite the early confusion, I soon settled into an extremely tough table featuring Mark Vos, Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier, Theo Jorgensen, Jesse Jones and Bengt Sonnert, battling through day one with average chips only to fall early on day two.

Just to be involved in these events is a pleasure though, and with the biggest European Poker Tour in history under way, and European poker at an all-time high, there’s never been a better time to join the new wave of online European players taking the live poker world by storm!
