217 players made the trek to the Polish capital of Warsaw for the European Poker Tour Main Event. Sorel Mizzi, Isabelle Mercier, Katja Thater, Johnny Lodden, Roland De Wolfe and Bertrand Grospellier would all fight valiantly, all in the hopes of reaching the final table. Each would succumb well before they got the chance.
Ten former EPT champions were in attendance at the Hyatt Regency Hotel for the 2008 EPT Polish Open. Only one would make the final table… France’s Arnaud Mattern. Mattern, a winner of the EPT Prague championship in December 2007, clashed with fellow countrymen Ludovic Lacay. However, Mattern hit the rail in fifth place after seeing his pocket tens get crushed by Joao Barbosa’s set of eights – he made them on the turn. Ouch!
Mattern bid the birthday boy from Porto, Portugal farewell and collected his €72,724 consolation prize. Barbosa, an online qualifier who has cashed twice before in the four total EPT events he’s played in, went on to crush Italian wunderkind and Poker Stars pro Dario Minieri, who also has a WSOP bracelet by the way, in third place.
On Minieri’s final hand, it was another battle of the pocket pairs. This time Barbosa had the higher pair (9s). Minieri’s sevens caught no love from the board and bid arrivederci to the crowd €123,162 wealthier.
Barbosa was then left to dispatch of the Danish player Nico Behling, which he did despite the fairly slow and steady pace of the heads-up match.
These are the final results:
1) Joao Barbosa - €367,141
2) Nico Behling - €205,270
3) Dario Minieri - €123,162
4) Atanas Gueorguiev - €87,973
5) Arnaud Mattern - €57,476
6) Sergey Shcherbatskiy - €57,476
7) Andrea Benelli - €45,746
8) Ludovic Lacay - €32,843
9) Michael Mulheim - €21,114
Next up on the EPT is the Prague tournament. Qualifiers are going on now at PokerStars. Head on over there today to qualify!
