Layne “Back to Back” Flack is back, y’all. The 39 year old poker star, who has had his share of triumph and tragedy, is on top of the poker world again. The talented South Dakota native, who makes his home in both Nevada and Montana, won two consecutive WSOP bracelet in 2002. Prior to ’08, he had a total of five:
1999 – $3,000 Pot Limit Hold’em ($224,400)
2002 – $2,000 No Limit Hold’em ($303,880)
2002 – $1,500 No Limit Hold’em ($268,020)
2003 – $2,500 Omaha Hi-Lo Split ($119,260)
2003 – $1,500 Limit Hold’em Shootout ($120,000)
Flack had also done well on the World Poker tour with second place finishes at the 2004 Ultimate Bet Poker Classic and the 2002 World Poker Finals (Foxwoods) as well as a title at a WPT Invitational Tournament (2003). He entered the final table of the 34th event at the 2008 $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha w/rebuys event having spent more than $33,000 on the tourney with his multiple rebuys.
Flack wasn’t the only five-time WSOP bracelet winner at the final table, however. Ted Forrest was sitting there. Forrest had more chips and more cashes in recent history to his credit. However, he left the match in fifth place (ironic, huh) after being eliminated by Jacobo Fernandez. Fernandez, a resident of Hollywood, Florida, is having on helluva WSOP. He’s made bank in a total of five events including second place in Event #3, a Pot Limit Hold’Em competition. This time, he took it all the way to third place, winning more than $222k.
Flack ko’d Fernandez, who despite not winning a bracelet this season is in the top spot for the Player of the Year title so far, and entered into heads-up play with a dominant lead against German online pro Daniel “amichaiKK” Makowsky. The heads-up match didn’t last long and Flack announced that he wanted to “savor this one a little bit.”
Hopefully Flack, who gave three of his bracelets to his father and brothers, lost a fourth at a friend’s house and had one stolen from him, will get to hold onto this one for a good long while. With this win, Layne Flack get the biggest tournament cash of his career with $577,725 in first place winnings and…joins an elite club of six bracelet winners that includes Men “The Master” Nguyen, TJ Cloutier and Jay Heimowitz.
These are the final results:
1) Layne Flack - $577,725
2) Daniel Makowsky - $355,050
3) Jacobo Fernandez - $222,659
4) Dario Alioto - $180,534
5) Ted Forrest - $144,427
6) Kyle Kloeckner - $114,338
7) Michael Guzzardi - $90,267
8) Tim West - $72,213
9) Francis Vizza - $54,160
