Neil Acre, a popular Filipino poker player who runs the Metro Card Club in his country’s capital, bested a field of 262 players to take the 2009 Asian Poker Tour title in Manila. Held at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Manila, Acre held the chip lead at the end of Day 1A and took to the final table in third.
En route to his victory, Acre defeated Liz Lieu in 7th place and Casey Kastle in third. Then, he went on to eliminate Steve Yea of South Korea in heads-up play. On the final hand, Acre was dominated with his K,Q as Yea held big slick in the hole. The turn yielded a queen and gave Acre the title as well as $185k.
As Acre said of the match, “I knew that to get anywhere at the final table I had to keep applying pressure and my game plan worked perfectly.”
