de Korver catches some lucky breaks to take the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event.
Pieter de Korver has brought the European Poker Tour Grand Final title back to Europe. His win marks the first by a European player since Rob Hollink took down the first season of the event.
The chip leader going into the final table was Dag Martin Mikkelsen. However, Mikkelsen faced some down times and de Korver, who at one point was down to two big blinds, went on a serious upswing that carried him to heads-up play and the eventual win.
Mikkelsen, for his part, hit the rail in fourth place after doubling up de Korver several times. The Norwegian player Mikkelsen was eliminated by Netherlands native de Korver when his A,8 was outraced by the Q,9 of his opponent.
Here are the final results:
1) Pieter de Korver - €2,300,000
2) Matthew Woodward - €1,300,000
3) Mikhail Tulchinskiy - €800,000
4) Dag Martin Mikkelsen - €600,000
5) Eric Qu - €470,000
6) Alem Shah - €350,000
7) Daniel Zink - €250,000
8) Peter Traply - €170,000
