Scott Janes is 19 years old. The New Foundlander, who hails from Deer Lake, currently studies physics at Memorial University. Earlier this week, he bested 59 others in the North American College Poker Championship (NACPC). The NACPC is an online tournament series, open exclusively to registered college/university students in the US and Canada.
Janes received $9,000 towards his tuition for the 2007/8 school year as well as a European Poker Tour (EPT) prize pack which includes tournament buy-in and $3,000 for airfare, accommodations, food and so forth. The young man admits that he’s not exactly a newcomer to poker. He’s been playing hold’em for about “four or five years” and “started out playing poker at a very young age with my Pop, five-card stud.”
He holds no illusions about his chances on the EPT and admits that winning would be a long shot. However, if he plays “like I know I can” then he does think that he can “make some money.”
PokerStars is the event sponsor for the European Poker Tour. Right now, they’re focusing their efforts on getting you to the WSOP this summer. On June 15th, they’re holding a special qualifier that is guaranteeing a minimum of 200 WSOP Main Event seats. Click here for the scoop!
