148 players plunked down $50k to take part in the HORSE Championship at the 2008 World Series of Poker. HORSE, for those of you unfamiliar with the game, is a mixed game that includes Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Razz, Stud, and Stud 8/b. Many pros feel that this game should be the one played at the Main Event.
Unsurprisingly, of course, a slew of pros signed on to play in the event including Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey and Doyle Brunson. The final table was like a who’s who of the poker world. Erick “E-Dog” Lindgren had the chip lead as the action got underway with 3.68 million. However, Scotty “Prince of Poker” Nguyen was nipping at his heels with 3.535 mil.
Patrick Bueno, the only amateur, sitting at the final table, hit the rail during a round of Razz. Lindgren had an eight-low and Bueno, who make his home in Paris, France, caught a nasty hand with trip fours. Former WSOP Main Event champ, Huckleberry Seed left the table next. He was eliminated during a hand of Stud Hi-Low by 22 year old Michael DeMichele, a third place finisher at the 2006 US Poker Championship. Seed received nearly $285k for his efforts.
During the same round, Scott Nguyen attacked. He KO’ed Barry Greenstein from the competition. Greenstein, who has cashed in all three of the $50k HORSE championships at the WSOP and has a bracelet in Razz already this summer, saw his Aces up get crushed by Scotty’s trip sevens.
A little while later, Lyle Berman, who earned his first of three WSOP bracelets back in 1989, became a spectator. The World Poker Tour chairman got caught in a battle between Nguyen and DeMichele, adding $444,000 to his coffers. Matt Glantz and Erick Lindgren, winner of Event #4, would then succumb to Nguyen and DeMichele juggernaut in short shrift, leaving the two chip titans to work it out in heads-up play.
Nguyen had a clear advantage with 12,140,000 chips to the New York resident’s 2,660,000. The Prince of Poker showed no mercy, nearly knocking out the youngster in a hand of stud. However, he waited until the round shifted to Hold’em to seal the deal and put the final nail in the coffin of his opponent and stake claim to one of the richest titles at the 2008 WSOP.
These are the results:
1) Scotty Nguyen - $1,989,120
2) Michael DeMichele - $1,243,200
3) Erick Lindgren - $781,440
4) Matthew Glantz - $568,320
5) Lyle Berman - $444,000
6) Barry Greenstein - $355,200
7) Huck Seed - $284,160
8) Patrick Bueno - $230,880
