619 players took part in the Main Event in the EPT Barcelona. As the final table got underway, Martin Nielsen of Denmark had the chip lead with 1,229,000 chips in his stack. Breathing down his neck was Sebastian Ruthenberg, who won his first WSOP bracelet this summer in the Seven Card Stud Hi-Low World Championship. The German poker player had 1,204,000 chips in front of him. Also sitting at the table were EPT San Remo winner Jason Mercier and fellow WSOP 2008 bracelet holder ($2,000 Pot Limit Hold’em) Davidi Kitai.
Strangely enough Nielsen was the first elimination from the final table. He took some hits early and was busted out by the American Mercier. Unfortunately, Mercier would hit the rail in sixth place. His pocket sevens proved to be no match for the pair of ladies that Irish man Fintan Gavin had in his hand. Gavin had a fantastic run, knocking out quite a few of the final table players and made it to heads up play against Ruthenberg.
However, the Irishman was at quite a disadvantage. He was down nearly five to one against the dark-haired German. Heads-up play lasted just three hands before Ruthenberg added an EPT title to his WSOP bracelet.
These are the EPT Barcelona final standings:
1) Sebastian Ruthenberg - €1,361,000
2) Fintan Gavin - €792,000
3) David Kitai - €455,000
4) Daniele Mazzia - €351,000
5) Dren Ukella - €292,000
6) Jason Mercier - €227,800
7) Samuel Chartier - €178,000
8) Martin Neilsen - €119,000
