Billy “The Croc” Argyros is one of Australia’s most famous poker players. On Australia Day in Melbourne at the Aussie Millions the iconic pro took down one of his country’s favorite games in a special tournament. Argyros was the last man standing in the 2-card Manila event.
Basically, 2-card Manila is a variation of holdem. It uses 32 cards in the deck with nothing less than seven left. Players get two hole cards, both have to be used to make the best five-card hand. Since the deck is smaller, flushes beat full houses.
Argyros went into the final table with a commanding chip lead and blazed a trail through his opponents, facing Joe Meissner heads-up. Meissner was at a severe disadvantage being down 5 to 1. He was unable to overcome the deficit and earned $12,095 as the runner-up.
Argyros claimed $18,000 AUD for his efforts and told the crowd, “It’s not about the money. It’s about the gold ring!”
