Watkinson and Lederer Take Down Titles at Crown Casino

Serena DaSilva - 15 Jan 2008

Stars such as Steve Zolotow and Andy “The Monk” Black came out in droves for Event #7 at the Aussie Millions. The $3,000 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha tournament featured rebuys and an impressive final table. WPT Mike Sexton, Max “The Italian Pirate” Pescatori and Tom “Durrrr” Dwan were all sitting at that final table, hoping to take down the top prize of $ (AUD)180,600. Also seated was Jamie Pickering. Pickering had already won an event at Crown Casino this year. He was victorious in the $1100 NLHE event played earlier in the week. This time, Pickering would take eighth place.

However, in the end Lee Watkinson, who holds a WSOP bracelet in PLO from 2006, won the event.

Here are the results:

1) Lee Watkinson - $ (AUD) 180,600
2) Tom Dwan - $(AUD) 103,200
3) Van Marcus - $ (AUD) 61,920
4) Mike Sexton - $ (AUD) 51,600
5) Mark Kassis - $(AUD) 41,280
6) Michael Guttman - $ (AUD) 30,960
7) Lenny Barshack - $ (AUD) 20,640
8) Jamie Pickering - $ (AUD) 15,480
9) Max Pescatori - $ (AUD) 10,320

Event 8 featured only 10 players. Only three of these made bank. The 2-card Manila poker tournament featured a $3,250 buy-in. The game itself is played with all of the cards 2 through 6 removed from the deck. Two cards are then dealt, face-down, to each player. Five community cards are shown one at a time, with a betting round after each. At the end of the hand, players must use their hole cards to create the best five-card hand.

It’s important to note that a flush outranks a full house in Manila – because of the removed cards. Aces can NOT play low for a straight.

These are the final standings:

1) Antonis Kambouroglou - $27,000
2) Warwick Mirzikinian - $16,200
3) Yevgeniy Timoshenko - $10,800
4) Graeme Putt - $0
5) Max Donnelly - $0
6) David Steicke - $0
7) Markas Salkanovic- $0
8) Fred Bart - $0
9) Mark Scott - $0
10) Karib Karib- $0

The $100,000 No-Limit Hold’em Tournament featured the crème de la crème of the poker world including last year’s champ Erick “E-Dog” Lindgren and the 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event champion, Gus “Great Dane” Hansen as well as Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, Tony G and Chris “Jesus” Ferguson. All tolled, 25 entrants paid the high-rolling100k, generating a 2.5million prize pool.

First place went to Howard “The Professor” Lederer. Annie Duke’s big bro netted $ (AUD) 1.25 million, trumping the $125,000 he earned at the Ladbrokes Poker Million VI in December 2007. Also making money in the event were UK pro Mark Teltscher, who finished second at the EPT Barcelona Open in 2007, and Jeffrey Lisandro, winner of a WSOP bracelet in seven card stud in the summer of ’07.

A $2200 mixed game tournament was held at the Crown Casino as Event #10 of the 2008 Aussie Millions. The names of the game were Pot Limit Hold’em, Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo. 114 people paid to play. 13 of these made it all the way to Day Two. Dag Mikkelsen of Norway, a fella who’s cashed in the WSOP Main Event as well as the PaddyPower Irish Poker Open and the EPT Barcelona in the past twelve months, held the chip lead as Day Two got underway. Dag would ride his chip lead like a wave all the way to the final table until eventually succumbing in third place. Mikkelsen was bested by the tournament’s eventual champ, Michael Pesek. Pesek, a resident of Carol Stream, Illinois, finished strong at the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Classic in 2007, taking 48th place and $38,545 for his efforts there.
