Preparations for the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) are well underway. Betfair Poker, the official sponsor of the event, has confirmed that the series will be held entirely at Leicester Square, which is otherwise known as the Casino at the Empire. Located in the heart of London, the Empire is one of the newer venues in the London Clubs International (LCI) brand. Originally, plans had events for the 2008 WSOPE to be held at other venues such as The Sportsman & Fifty or perhaps even The Golden Nugget or Rendezvous.
This year, the WSOPE will feature four events, beginning on September 19, 2008. The schedule is as follows:
- (9-19-08) Event #1, £1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Day 1A (three-day event / two opening days)
- (9-22-08) Event #2, £2,500 H.O.R.S.E. (three-day event)
- (9-24-08) Event #3, £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha (three-day event)
- (9-27-08) Event #4, £10,000 World Championship No-Limit Hold'em (five-day event / two opening days)
According to the WSOP’s director of Marketing, Ty Stewart, efforts have been made to increase visibility and convenience. As he said, "We have enhanced the schedule to provide more variety and game play, greatly broadened the worldwide television exposure and have brought the event under one roof tobetter the player experience for this prestigious and premiere event."
The preliminary player list includes some of the world’s best and brightest such as Erick Lindgren, Jennifer Harman-Traniello, Phil Hellmuth, reigning WSOPE Main Event champion Annette Obrestad and at least three of the November Nine (Ivan Demidov, David “Chino” Rheem and Peter Eastgate).
