A relatively small field of 1,158 players took to the felt on America’s Independence Day on Friday July 4th for Day 1B of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event. As each player entered the Amazon Room to start his/her day, they were handed an American flag while the National Anthem was blared over the loud speakers. Many players – even those not from the US of A were decked out in their red, white and blue.
Pros came out in droves to take part in the activities including Andy Black, Tuan Le, newly signed PokerStars’ player Kathy Liebert, Bill Edler, Humberto Brenes, Erik Seidel, Daniel Negreanu and Australian cricket player Shane Warne. Former WSOP Main Event champions Jamie Gold, Tom McEvoy, Greg Raymer and Robert Varkonyi were also in attendance.
Ted Forrest, who barely made it to his seat because he forgot his photo ID, was among one of the first eliminations of the day. Dewey Tomko, Kenny Tran, Ram Vaswani and Daniel Negreanu, who we had predicted as one of the front runners to take the title this year, all hit the rails on Day 1B as did Farzad Bonyadi, Jacobo Fernandez and Lee Watkinson.
Ben Sarnoff, who already cashed twice at the 2008 WSOP, was in the chip lead at the end of Day 1B. He held 177,500 chips. A total of 615 players remained as the day finished including Martin Klaser, Rasmus Nielsen, Barny Boatman, Thor Hansen, Hoyt Corkins, David Colclough, Erik Seidel, Patrik Antonius and many others.
