Day 1D was the biggest first Day of the Main Event for 2008. 2,461 took to the felt, bringing the total field to an impressive 6,844, the second-largest WSOP Main Event number in history. This brings the total prize pool for this event to a mind-boggling $64,333,600 with first-place expected to receive $9,119,517.
Phil Hellmuth made a grand entrance, complete with military jeep and dressed as a general. Johnny Chan was there with his red-tipped hair. Doyle and Todd Brunson were also in attendance as was Phil Ivey. Unfortunately, the day was not a good one for either Todd Brunson or Phil Ivey. Both men were eliminated before the end of the Day as were other notables such as David Williams, Annie Duke, Noel Furlong, John Phan, Chris Ferguson, Dario Minieri, Layne Flack and Michael Mizrachi.
As the night drew to a close (or morning is more like it), Steve Austin sat at the top of the chip heap with 149k. Victor Ramdin, David Oppenheim, Alexander Kostritsyn, Carlos Mortensen, Gus Hansen, Antonio Esfandiari, Jean-Robert Bellande, Jennifer Harman and Phil Gordon still remained in the thick of things.
Play will not resume until Tuesday when half of the 3,000 remaining players will return for Day 2A.
Would you like to be part of the APT when it hits Macau in early September.
