Absolute Poker has been embroiled in a cheating scandal in recent weeks. Folks have alleged that a player using the moniker “Potripper” was cheating due to the fact that he demonstrated “flawless river play” in a tournament. It seemed to them that Potripper could actually read his opponents’ hole cards and not in the scary, better than Miss Cleo way that Daniel Negreanu does it.
The truth is that there is definitely something to this story. Peter Norton, former Grand Chief of the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake and the owner of Tokwiro Enterprises ENRG, which has 100% interest in AP, released a statement to AP customers reagarding the issue. In it, he admits that “there has been a security breach in our system that allowed unlawful access to player information that resulted in unfair play.” The site is taking this matter very seriously and consider the breach “to be a horrendous and inexcusable offense.”
Apparently a high-ranking and trusted consultant for the online poker site was indeed employing a method which allowed him to see his opponents’ hole cards. The site admits it didn’t handle the situation effectively. In fact, when players first discussed the possibility of cheating at the 2+2 site back in September, their claims were dismissed by the online poker room.
Norton made it clear that AP plans to make changes within the company to rectify this matter soon. Players in the tournament in question will receive a full refund of their buy-in $1,050 and 10% interest. Everyone who cashed will move up one spot.
The consultant in question has been dismissed. However, the company and the Kahnawake Gaming Commission are still trying to determine if this individual acted alone or in conjunction with others.
Check out this recreation of the situation on YouTube. It clearly shows that the hole cards were indeed visible to someone the whole time:
