Jerry Yang’s life has changed since winning $8.2 million and the World Series of Poker Main Event title in 2007. Yang, who was born in Laos, has a big heart. He has a master’s degree in health psychology and has worked as a therapist and social worker. A father of six, Yang is now able to spend his days at home with his children and his wife.
However, the man, who once spent four years in a refugee camp in Thailand, has not forgotten his promise. He told the cameras after winning the WSOP title that he would give 10% of winnings from that point on to charitable causes.
On March 29th, Yang, a California resident, will head to Long Beach and distribute food, toys, hygiene products and more to children in the area. He is doing this in conjunction with the Feed the Children organization and Washington Redskins safety Omar Stoutmire. The items are expected to assist 4,000 families in Southern California.
About the effort, Yang said, “It’s going to be a great honor and a great privilege to be walking hand in hand with them and Feed the Children. I just can’t wait.”
Yang first became involved with Feed the Children in the early 90s. Since winning the WSOP, he’s donated more than $1,000,000 to various organizations including the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House and his church.
Yang says that he’s so committed to charitable works because he knows “what it’s like to be poor” and feels that “to be able to give back it’s actually an honor and a privilege.”
