Thirty players took to the felt this past weekend after the Big Brown took down the Kentucky Derby title. They paid $2,500 to play the Kentucky Derby Poker Championship, a charity event held at Caesar’s Indiana. Poker pros (and WSOP bracelet holders) Phil Hellmuth, Jr. and Robert Williamson III put the tournament together.
A total of $60,000 was raised for various charities including the Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre, the Health and Climate Foundation and the Robby Albarado Foundation.
Poker pro Layne Flack, himself a WSOP bracelet winner, won $13,000 in the event as well as a seat at the 2008 World Series of Poker. Jan Karl was the second place finisher, earning $8,000 and a seat at the 2008 Aruba Poker Classic, which is sponsored by Hellmuth's online home, Ultimate Bet.
Editor Note: Robert Williamson III finished fourth at the FTOPS Main Event held on February 18th, 2007. There’s still plenty of time to qualify for the FTOPS VIII Main Event coming up on May 18th.
