Fire Rock Casino Opens in NM

Deanna Goodson - 1 Jan 2009

The Navajo Nation has finally opened its first casino, Fire Rock, east of Gallup, NM. Expected to gross about $32 million for the tribal group, the Fire Rock Casino has nearly 6,000 sq. meters of space including a poker room, slot machines and much more.

Right now, the casino is in a tent-like structure. Gaming officials are looking at a more permanent site which will potentially include a hotel and truck stop. The tribe had previously voted against a casino, but the hope is that the benefits outweigh the risks for the ‘nation’.

Plans are in the works for the Navajo to create another casino in New Mexico and four in Arizona.
