Marty Smyth has had great success in tournament poker winning an Irish Poker Open, Ladbrokes Million and World Series of Poker bracelet.
Marty Smyth first discovered poker as a teenager. However, it wasn’t until a trip to a Dublin Casino at the age of 22 that the Belfast native discovered Omaha poker. When he did, he became hooked. Smyth, who also plays Texas Hold’em rather well, moved up through the ranks, eventually becoming a professional player.
Smyth has a long record with the Irish Poker Open. Before winning the series in 2007, he cashed three times, placing 7th in 2002, 6th in 2003 and 15th in 2006. He defeated British poker pro Roland De Wolfe heads-up in ’07 to win the Terry Rogers Memorial Trophy and earning €650,000.
Marty Smyth also competed three times in the Ladbrokes Poker sponsored Poker Million. In 2006, he finished 6th on the final table. In 2007, he came in second to Joe Beevers. Then, in 2008, Smyth won the event and the million dollar first-place prize.
2008 was a very good year for Marty Smyth. Not only did he win the Poker Million he also took down his first World Series of Poker event. Smyth won his bracelet and $859,532 in the $10,000 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha Championship.
