Taking a break from defending his pal Wesley Snipes in his tax evasion trial in Florida, Woody Harrelson joined fellow improvisational stars such as Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, and Hank Azaria at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas for a little poker. The crew of actors, many of whom are poker players in their spare time, got together to flim a movie called “The Grand” which takes place during a fictional poker tournament of the same name. Sort of.
The event was a fictional one, during which a fake documentary is filmed of six players who make the final table of The Grand, but the idea seems to have grown on the Golden Nugget powers that be, and bada-boom, bada-bing, there is now a “The Grand” tournament being held at the casino.
The film, which is in post production and should hit theaters in the US on March 21st, is an improvisational fun fest directed by Zak Penn, who also wrote the treatment used as script by the actors. The fact that they knew how to play no limit Texas Hold’em allowed them to be at ease at the table and just let the funny flow.
The actual tourney, the Grand Poker Series, will run for one month starting June 6th.
