Allen Carter, known as “AawwNutz” online, picked up the latest WPT title at the Southern Poker Championship.
Breaking the news ahead of the broadcast on Fox Sports Net, we have the winner of the 2009 Southern Poker Championship, part of the World Poker Tour's Season VII Schedule.
Allen "AawwNutz" Carter beat out a field of 283 entries for the Southern Poker Championship main event, which was played at the Biloxi's Beau Rivage Casino, the first WPT event to play at this venue since 2007.
The prize pool from the buy ins cranked up to just over $2.6 million, but the way the funds would be chopped would not bring the top player equal to a million dollar payout, something of a World Poker Tour tradition. The Beau Rivage came to the rescue by paying out an additional $24,219 to the winner, just to give that nice, warm, “WPT Millionaire” feeling to the proceedings.
The top players did not include top name pros, although Vanessa Rousso nearly made the TV table before she was knocked out in 7th place. Still, she did better than the rest of her contemporaries, including David "the Dragon" Pham, Mark Seif, Ted Forrest, Barry Greenstein and Hoyt Corkins.
The TV table finishers were:
1. Allen Carter -- $1,000,000
2. Bobby Suer -- $501,028
3. Soheil Shamseddin -- $263,725
4. Hilbert Shirey -- $184,607
5. Tyler Smith -- $134,500
6. Chuck Kim -- $105,490
