Nicky Power Biography
Known for his witty table talk and an infectious enthusiasm for the game, Nicky Power is one of the most popular and consistent players on the Irish poker landscape.
Having just finished a Masters Degree in Accounting as a mature student in September 2004; Nicky stumbled across online poker and initially started out playing freerolls. Around the same time he found a small hold’em game in a local pub. An aptitude for numbers coupled with a misspent youth playing seven card stud and draw poker and a lifetime’s experience of sports betting meant the game came easy to him.
A little more than a year later Nicky had taken down one of the top events of the Irish poker calendar, the €1,100 entry Macau Winter Festival main event for €20,000. After this success, which was the culmination of nine profitable months, he decided to try his hand as a full time player and handed in his notice to the accounting practice where he worked.
The next 18 months were spent building his roll online specialising in six man sit and go tournaments as well as honing his live game. The 2007 Irish Open where Nicky finished sixth to fellow Boylepoker pro Marty Smyth for $133,000 is where Nicky really came to prominence.
One particular hand he played against Roland De Wolfe three tables’ out in that tournament has become the stuff of folklore featuring in countless poker articles and warranting a mention in the Racing Posts book “100 greatest Gamblers and Gambles”. The dealer had mistakenly mucked his cards after Nicky had raised all in over a De Wolfe raise. While facing an intensive stare down, Nicky showed immense presence of mind having noticed the dealer’s mistake to keep his cool and cover the area where his cards should have been with his hands; eventually Roland folded and Nicky scooped the pot.
Since that result in 2007 Nicky has been a constant at the latter stages of major Irish events showing an unmatched level of consistency to run deep. There have been many five-figure results for Nicky over the last two years including $60,000 at the Irish Poker Classic 2008 and $30,000 at the 2009 World Series of Poker main event.
Nicky can be found playing on Boylepoker.com and wearing the lucky Boylepoker logo wherever the game is played on the Emerald Isle.
