It may still be a couple of months until November, but we’re wondering what the World Series of Poker final table players are doing. Dennis Phillips, the man who is in the lead currently and will remain so until the table is played, has announced plans to donate 1% of his tournament earnings to the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Bad Beat on Cancer fundraiser.
Phillips, aka Fordman, said, “I am thrilled to contribute a portion of my WSOP earnings to the Prevent Cancer foundation.” PokerStars, who is sponsoring the 53 year old down-to-earth guy from St. Louis, MO, has decided to match him dollar for dollar. If Phillips, who held the chip lead for the last two days of Main Event play, should win, he will earn more than $9.1 million. That would give Phil Gordon’s foundation more than $182,000.
As Chris Moneymaker, the 2003 WSOP Main Event champ, said, “Dennis Phillips is a stand-up guy who brings a positive feeling to the WSOP final table...Dennis is just happy to be playing poker and sees an opportunity to help others. His efforts are inspiring to the poker community and I’m excited to see how it all turns out in November…”
In addition to the Bad Beat on Cancer, Phillips is also involved with a bunch of multiple sclerosis charities. He became interested in the illness when his brother got diagnoses with the disease. PokerStars has also been active in charitable activities. Recently the online pokerroom, that’s home to Phillips and Moneymaker donated $51k to the Kentucky Hemophilia Foundation while providing Donald Hobbs, who has hemophilia, the opportunity a chance to play in the 2008 WSOP with Chris Moneymaker, his idol.
