For a while there, rumor had it that GSN wouldn’t pick up the popular series High Stakes Poker for a fifth season. The series, which is the only one to show poker pros and amateurs throwing down big-time cash in a ring game that goes on across multiple episodes, was one of the highest rated on the network. However, when the World Poker Tour moved to GSN at the end of 2007, many speculated that there might not have been enough room on the network for two poker-themed series.
Cut to spring and the rumor mill ran rampant that GSN had decided that HSP was over and out. Sources supposedly quoted co-host AJ Benza saying that it ‘looked like High Stakes Poker wasn’t coming back.’ Speculation was high that GSN was abandoning its shift towards games for a younger demographic and going back to more ‘traditional’ programming.
Of course, when the World Poker Tour announced that it was left without a home at the end of its sixth season, bloggers and news outlets seemed to take this as confirmation that GSN wanted nothing to do with poker. That is…until now.
High Stakes Poker will begin filming new episodes in September. Co-hosts Gabe Kaplan and AJ Benza will return to commentate on the action. As Jennifer Minezaki, GSN’s Director of Public Relations verified via this statement: “GSN has picked up the option on the 5th season of HIGH STAKES POKER and continues to enjoy poker on its air."
Watch Daniel Negreanu and Gus Hansen take part in a nosebleed pot on High Stakes Poker. It's really cool to see the cash fly into the middle of the table:
