Phil Ivey isn't your run-of-the-mill poker professional. He shuns the limelight. Ivey is soft-spoken, does his job (and does it well) and keeps his emotions close to his vest. He's not ostentatious. However, he commands respect.
Ivey, along with his mother, Pamela Simmons, has begun a foundation called The Budding Ivey Foundation. Named in part after his beloved grandfather Leonard “Bud” Simmons, The Budding Ivey Foundation is “dedicated to providing educational opportunities to empower at-risk children and their families that will ultimately inspire them to believe, achieve and succeed.”
In order to help raise funds to reopen Empowered 2 Excel, a North Las Vegas children's academy that worked to give children who qualify academically a chance to participate in enhanced learning programs the organization is hosting a special poker tournament on July 1, 2008 at The Tank, which is part of The Golden Nugget Casino.
The event is a $1,000 donation with $500 option 're-donations'. It begins at 8pm and will be held in conjunction with The Budding Ivey Game Night Celebration and the Sixth Annual World Series of Barbecue.
