He’s the most decorated Olympian in history, the fastest swimmer on the planet, but Michael Phelps has a dream of playing in the World Series of Poker. Shortly after winning his eighth gold medal in Beijing, bringing his medal total to 14 golds, the most of any single Olympian in history, Phelps told reporters that “I think it would be so cool to play in the World Series of Poker.”
Of course, he admits that his “game is a little off right now.” People in Windsor Ontario, just off the border from the Michigan location where Phelps trained for the 2008 Beijing games said that he could often be spotted at the Harrah’s property in Windsor Ontario practicing on the $1/$2 tables and his game was pretty good. He was considered a tight/aggressive player and very competitive.
Phelps certainly wouldn’t be the first athlete to make the transition to poker. Current and former athletes such as Orel Hershiser, Shane Warne, Boris Becker and Tony Parker have tried their hand at the game with varying degrees of success.
Regardless, the game would be just as happy to have Phelps in it as Phelps would be to play it we think. We’re sure that the guys and gals the thinks it would be ‘cool’ to meet would be as thrilled to meet him.
