The National Hockey League (NHL) Commissioner Gary Bettman announced earlier this week that the league will hold its annual awards ceremony at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas this June. The league also plans to host a charity poker tournament in partnership with Poker Stars the day before the ceremony (June 17, 2009) called the NHL Charity Shootout.
A number of celebrities and athletes are expected to play in the event. As Bettman said, “I am pleased to announce today that the NHL will team with Pokerstars.net and the NHL Players' Association to present [the NHL Charity Shootout] in connection with the 2009 NHL Awards."
Charities that will benefit from the tournament include the Ronald McDonald House in Las Vegas and the NHL Players’ Association’s Goals and Dreams. Players will also be able to donate to the charities of their choice in the event.
