WPT Mike Sexton Called to Court

Brian Thomas - 17 Feb 2009

They don’t call him the Ambassador of Poker for nothing – World Poker Tour commentator Mike Sexton is setting the record straight about poker in a legal case in America.

The silver/gray hair, immaculately coifed. The steely eyes, no longer hidden behind thick glasses. The sense of virility that comes from the recent birth of a child. The build of a former gymnast and paratrooper. No wonder the defense wanted to pull Mike Sexton into a trial concerning illegal gambling in a South Carolina court case – let’s face it, he’s a stud.

But he also knows a thing or two about poker, which was probably at least considered when his name came up in the defense room (do they actually have a defense room?) as the battle rages on, as it does in courtrooms and the media all around the world, over whether or not poker is a game of skill or luck.

Of course, it’s a game of both, but the fact that so much of the game is dependant upon skill is the lynchpin of defense, a way to scoop poker safely out of the stewpot of “gambling games” that are often labeled as illegal.

The details of the case are unimportant (I bet the defendants would LOVE to read that), at least in comparison to the actual determination by the judge if “poker is a game of skill” will fly. Should that be the case, it could be used to set a precedent in other, similar cases in the US, Europe, and everywhere else.
