How to Spot a Killer Omaha Hi Starting Hand

Deanna Goodson - 1 Mar 2009

Omaha Hi, which is usually played in the Pot Limit version, is a variant of Hold’em poker in which the player takes two cards from his/her hand and pits them against three from the board (community cards) to make the best hand. By holding four hole cards, a player can connect with the flop in many ways. However, it’s often hard for players to know which hands to play at all.

Instinctively, it seems, most players want to play more starting hands with four to choose from. However, the actuality is that you should still play only premium hands to maximize your earning potential. Everyone at the table has more cards which takes away cards you’ll need to connect with.

Got that, good?

Moving along, you should choose hands that work well together. High suited cards, pocket pairs and top straight cards are highly desirable.

For example, A,A,K,Q is a premium Omaha High starting hand for various reasons. The pocket aces can yield you a nut full house and a stellar pair of trips (or quads). The fact that the hand is double suited with an ace on the high end can give you double the opportunity for the nut flush. The AK or AQ can also potentially bring you a Broadway, the highest straight possible or even a royal flush.

With all those possibilities you’ll wanna bet a hand like this pre-flop.
