Pocket Aces (credit: Harrah's)

This very short list is by no means typical of the only hands you can play in No-Limit Texas Holdem. These are just hands you can play for a raise no matter where the button is pre-flop.

After the flop, you have to really pay attention to the board. Make sure that there are no straight, flush or set possibilities that can beat you.

Following are five starting hands you can always play – and yes, they are in a particular order.

  • Ace-Ace (AA) – This is the absolute best starting hand in Holdem. Sometimes, this hand is referred to as pocket rockets or American Airlines. You can play this big both pre- and post-flop without worrying too much about anyone drawing out on you.
  • Ace-King (AK) – big slick. It’s a drawing hand which means that you have to hit something to win with it. Possibilities include an Ace-High straight or a flush.
  • King-King (KK) – The odds of being dealt Kings pre-flop are about 73 to 1. This hand is also a big favorite over any other pocket pair, except Aces, in which case it’s a big underdog (about 20 to 1). The hand is most often referred to as cowboys.
  • Queen-Queen (QQ) – This hand has a ton of names. It’s most commonly known as “the ladies.” On TV, QQ has been called “Siegfried and Roy” and “the Hilton Sisters,” among other monikers. Be careful post-flop. If bigger cards hit, you may consider folding right there.
  • Jack-Jack (JJ) – Jacks are often referred to as hooks. This hand should be played for a raise pre-flop and can make a multitude of straights ranging from Ace-high to seven-low. Like the Queens, however, you should be careful of higher cards as well as flushes and just about any possible triple or full house possibilities.
