Make a List, Check it Thrice

Before you sign up for that Sit and Go, do you have your checklist? Wait, you don’t know about the checklist? Read on to learn about this simple yet effective tool to improve your poker game.

One reason poker pros are as good as they are is because they work at it. Not just going through he motions by playing poker eight hours a day; they can only learn so much by osmosis. No, these pros WORK at it, constantly examining their play and working on ways to improve it, and one useful tool to do just that is the checklist.

Your checklist is going to be different than the next guy’s, and that is not only okay, it is expected. This is a personal list on what you need to work on to improve your game, and you need to check it three times when you play.

Before you Play
Let’s say your list includes items such as “Bluff less”, “Avoid Tilt at All Costs” and “Don’t play less than Tier 3 from Early Position.” Before you play is the first time you should review your list, lest you forget what you are supposed to be working on.

While you Play
At least once during play, somewhere near the middle of the night (cash game) or event (tournament game), check your list again, and review how you are doing. Did you forget and play Tier 5 hands under the gun? Are you letting the calling stations get under your skin?

After you Play
As soon as you can, while the experience is fresh, you should check your list a final time to review how you did. You should at this time add any items that you realize you need to work on for next game.
