What is your Bankroll Style?

Brian Thomas - 9 Nov 2008

You’ve heard of playing styles, but how abut bankroll styles? Are you a Maniac with your bankroll, or more of a Rock?

You know the four playing styles: the Manic is the Loose- Aggressive player, the Calling Station is the Loose- Passive player, the Rock is the Tight- Passive player and the Stone Cold Killer is the Tight- Aggressive player. These same concepts can -- and should -- be applied to how you manage your bankroll.

Can you guess what the best style of bankroll management is, based on what you know of the four playing styles?

The Maniac at the poker table plays a lot of hands and pushes hard when he plays. He is not afraid to put it all on the line on a gamble because the adrenaline is more important to him than winning -- even if he doesn’t admit it. The Maniac with a bankroll will play in game after game, regardless of how well he is doing, and doesn’t pay attention to choosing the right level based on his bankroll.

The Calling Station at the poker table is the social player who wants to be in every pot and in every street, but rarely takes action on his own.

The Loose- Passive bankroll player will play a lot of games regardless of how well he is doing, but he will stick to low limit games.

The Rock at the poker table will fold, fold, fold, and then only move when he has a monster hand. With a bankroll this player will avoid playing the small stakes, small prize pool games and instead blow his entire bankroll on one major tourney.

The Tight- Aggressive at the poker table waits, bides his time, and then strikes with force when he has a lock on the hand. Likewise with the bankroll this player will judiciously chose to play games he has a good chance of winning, and always in the right proportion to his bankroll, andthen plays his heart out.

As in poker play, the Tight- Aggressive style of bankroll management is the smart way to go.
