Poker Table Position Matters (credit: Home Poker Tournament)

Real estate professionals talk about “location, location, location.” Poker professionals have a similar saying – “position, position, position.” Where you’re sitting at the table in a given hand has an immense impact on how you play the cards you’re dealt.

Successful poker players know how to play position. Playing position is a concept that could take up an entire book on its own, but here is where you’ll get the basics.

You’re sitting at a ten-seat table. That’s the maximum allowed in casinos and most tournaments. There are three basic positions – early, middle or late.

Your position is judged with respect to where the dealer button is. In games such as those played in a casino where a professional or designated dealer is employed, the dealer button is especially important as it is the only way to denote who is sitting in that position.

  • Early position – Players immediately to the left of the dealer button. This usually includes both of the blinds and the player sitting to the left of them. This is considered the worst spot in poker because you act first on almost all betting rounds. (Note: The blinds act last pre-flop. That’s the only exception.) When you’re sitting here, play premium hands.
  • Middle position – Those players sitting in the middle of the table. They are a few positions away from the blinds and a few positions away from the dealer. They have more information than the players in early position and less than those in late position. It’s not the worst place to be, nor is it the best. Stick to premium hands and a few not-so premium hands.
  • Late position – These players are sitting in the cat-bird seats, so to speak. Late position is the best place to be. Players in this enviable spot are sitting in the dealer position or a few spots to his or her right. They have the most information before they act on each betting round. That’s because they’ve seen how most of the players have played their hands before they have to do anything. In late position, you can play a lot more hands than you can in any other position. If you make a raise, you’re more likely to win the hand uncontested.

As with any other skill, it takes time and practice to master the concept of position. Try online at TItanPoker.com now – they’ve got oodles of NLHE games at all limit levels for you to play!
