If you’re like most people, you don’t have enough disposable income to maintain a sizeable bankroll. Regardless of the amount of money you can set aside for the game, you should keep your poker money separate from your household money. Once you lose it, you’re through until the next session or month or whatever you determine works best with your financial situation, lifestyle and poker playing ability.

We understand that responsible money management skills are what often separates good players from great ones. So, we're going to give you five tips that will help you get a decent bankroll to begin your poker playing career that won’t put a dent in your wallet:

  1. Start small – The smaller the limit, the more hands you can play for less money. If you’re in a home game, make the limits nickels and dimes. Then you only need the price of a movie ticket to play some serious poker. Many internet casinos have micro limits, some of which start at as little as $.01/.02.
  2. Take advantage of internet sign-on bonuses – Internet casinos want your business. The majority offer bonuses. Some will double your initial deposit. Terms and conditions apply so do some window-shopping before you sign up. Chose the sites that give you the best opportunity to double or even triple your money.
  3. Don’t spend all your winnings on other stuff – If you want your bankroll to grow, you should take at least 50% of your winnings and put them right back into the bankroll.
  4. Don’t move up in stakes until you’re consistently beating them or have the bankroll to cover them – The quickest way to lose your money is to play in a limit you can’t handle. Don’t move up to a new limit until you have at least 100 times the big blind on it AND you’ve doubled your money at least 3 times in a row at the lower level. (For example, if you want to play $1/$2 table stakes, you need at least $200 to sit down to play or $2,000 to be a high roller at the table.)
  5. Never use money you need to survive to play poker – There are too many variables and too much luck involved in poker for you to bet the farm on the game, so to speak. Most pros would agree that your decision-making process is impaired when you’re playing with money you need.
