Joe Hachem, the 2005 WSOP Main Event Champion, had an impressive showing in the 2006 Main Event. His success was due in no small part to his unpredictable play. Hachem was not afraid to intimidate his opponents and act like he was bluffing – even when he wasn’t. In the following hand, he had lawyer and CardPlayer contributor Allyn Jaffry Schulman steaming…but not enough to make the call.
Game Type: No Limit Texas Hold’em
Tournament: 2006 World Series of Poker, Main Event
Players in hand: Allyn Jaffry Schulman, Joe Hachem, Daniel Karlson
Starting Hands
Allyn Jaffry Schulman - 10

Daniel Karlson - A

PreFlop
Joe Hachem - raises it up $1,000.
Daniel Karlson - another new guy, smooth calls.
Allyn Jaffry Schulman - been waiting for a good hand, flat calls.
The Flop -6

Allyn Jaffry Schulman - check.
Joe Hachem - bets out $2,500
Daniel Karlson, in the face of Joe, says “I’m not worried about her, just you.” He folds.
Schulman is semi - insulted, insisting she has him beat. She hems and haws, tanks it for a bit, and then insists she is laying down the best hand. Joe’s manipulations almost got her to call. Perhaps Schulman would finally calm down when she saw on TV that she did indeed make the correct play. Hash did out-flop her.
In this clip, Hachem gives some solid advice about how you’ve got to be careful about hand selection:
