Gavin Smith is a Canadian Poker player and WPT champion. He’s one of the world’s best-known poker players and one of the most fun to be around. However, Smith takes poker very seriously. In this hand, he shows how important it is to pay attention at the table even when you’re not in the hand. The info you can uncover can pay off big-time later on.
Game Type: No Limit Texas Hold’em
Tournament: World Poker Tour - Doyle Brunson North American Championship
Players in hand: Minh Ly, Gavin Smith
Starting Hands
Minh Ly J
, 9
Gavin Smith 9
, 10
PreFlop
Minh Ly Bets out $500k at the later stages of final table play.
Gavin Smith re- raises $2,120,000.
Ly folds.
So, how did this happen?
Previously Ly had felt a lot of luck coming his way and was on a feel-good trip. Up against Dan Harrington he lost money then sucked out for a big win and was feeling plenty of gamble in him. Smith was paying attention and had great read on Ly’s state of mind.
He knew Ly, who eventually went on to win the event, was pretty much willing to gamble with any two cards. Although this play was a bit of a gamble for Smith himself, he figured that if it paid off, it would be well worth it….and well, it was.
