Gavin Smith (credit: Wikipedia)

Gavin Smith is a gambling man. The Canadian player is known for his sense of humor and prop bets. The former World Poker Tour Mirage Poker Showdown Champion (2005) began playing the game when he was 26 and has risen to the top of the poker world in a short period of time. In this classic hand, Smith faces Dan Harrington.

Harrington is a former attorney and chess champ. The WPT champ – he took down the Legends of Poker event in 2007, Harrington has made the final table at the WSOP Main Event more than once, winning the whole she-bang back in 1995, earning a cool $1,000,000 for the effort.

Harrington, who learned much of his game at the Mayfair Club, with the likes of Howard Lederer and Erik Seidel, jokingly gave himself the nickname ‘Action Dan’ because he’s a tight-aggressive player. When Dan’s in a hand, “watch out”, which is what Gavin should’ve done here.

Tournament: World Poker Tour - Doyle Brunson North American Championship
Players in hand: Dan Harrington, Gavin Smith

Starting Hands
Dan Harrington - 8, 4
Gavin Smith - 10, 2

PreFlop
Dan Harrington - from the small blind and in for $100k, Dan asks Smith what he has left, and then moves all in.
Gavin Smith - With little choice, and perhaps swayed by holding the Brunson hand at the Brunson tourney, Smith calls.

The Flop -8, A, K

The Turn - 4
Now Smith is drawing dead. No hope against two pair.

The River - 4
Just to rub some full boat salt into the wounds. Smith is out in third with $327k.

A few years later, Dan Harrington chats with the World Poker Tour after his Legends of Poker win:
